The CIF State office announced Wednesday, April 28 that it has canceled all of this spring’s state championships.
However, it approved CIF Southern California regional championships for several team sports, including boys and girls basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and boys volleyball.
The CIF state’s announcement means there will be no state championships this year for swimming and diving, track and field and wrestling.
In a press release, the CIF said that because only two of the six Northern California sections were offering sectional championships, it was not possible for the northern sections to have regional championships, which forced the cancellation of all state championship team events.
CIF State commissioner Ron Nocetti said it was the CIF’s hope all along to offer state playoffs in some form where possible.
“From the time we announced our initial calendar back in the summer, we said we would do our best to offer every event we possibly could,” Nocetti said. “We feel we were at that point and are moving forward.”
Obviously, not having state championships, which is the state’s crown jewel, will be a disappointment who hoped to add a highlight to this year’s coronavirus-impacted sports year.
“Absolutely,” Nocetti said. “That was our goal all along to try and present as much of a normal year as possible. To not have state championships is always disappointing, especially for the students missing out on a great opportunity.”

The calendar is as follows for all team sports in the CIF Southern Section playoffs and championships and CIF State Southern California regional playoffs and championships:
The CIF-SS boys and girls soccer playoffs and championships will run from May 10-29 with state regional playoffs and championships, May 29 through June 5.
The CIF-SS boys volleyball playoffs and championships will run from May 17 through June 5 with the state regional playoffs and championships, June 5-12.
The CIF-SS boys and girls basketball playoffs and championships will run from May 25 through June 11 with the state regional playoffs and championships, June 12-19.
The CIF-SS baseball and softball playoff and championships will run from June 1-19 with state regional playoffs and championships, June 19-26.
CIF Southern Section boys and girls divisional championships will June 7-8 with the state regional finals, June 12-15.
The CIF-SS boys team tennis playoffs and championships will run from May 18-28 with the state regional finals May 29 through June 5.
The CIF-SS girls team tennis playoffs and championships will run from May 11-21 with the state regional finals May 29 through June 5.
